Web Design Time Wasters

Do you own a website? Do you spend time checking on the Google Search Engine to see where your site appears? Who is linking to your site and when will Google increase your PageRank?

You know, this is a pretty common scenario. It can take a while for Google to adjust your PageRank - they have a lot of websites to check, after all.

So what alternatives do you have while the PageRank process is going on? Do you keep checking your links? Do you take a sneaky look at your site traffic 8 times a day?

Some people would say that you could book a round-the-world tour while you're waiting for your PageRank to increase. They might even say you could go on the tour!

My advice is: don't waste time. Don't obsessively check your hits and don't keep checking your search position. Why? Because these are major distractions from the work that you should be doing on your site.

If you waste time here you may suffer from poor traffic levels, low conversion rates and ultimately missing profits.

So what exactly are these time wasters and why should you avoid them?

  1. Checking your website "hits" - this is a pretty misleading term anyway unless you understand it. Page Views is a better term since it shows real pages loaded by real visitors. It's better still to check your site visitors but this will be pretty low at the start unless you're propping it up with social networking
  2. Checking your PageRank. This can take several months to improve so there's no point checking it every day!
  3. Checking your position on a Google search. You might see some initial spikes where your site appears on page 1 for a day or two. This might be due to blog postings or social tagging. It's a long and laborious process searching for your site in the Google results. Also which search terms are you looking for?

What should you be doing? The best ways to improve your PageRank are to build plenty of relevant, interesting content and also to increase the number of other websites that link to yours

If you focus on these alternatives instead of being distracted then you will simplify your life on the web and eventually see an increase in your PageRank.
